According to a new report from research group and accelerator Startup Genome, Boston is the fifth best city in the world for technology startups. However, some fear that patent trolls are taking a toll on Boston’s innovation economy. Patent trolls, officially called patent assertion entities, make patent infringement claims against startups and small businesses, resulting in costly licensing fees or even going to court.
Representatives are once again working to pass a bill that would increase protections for startups and businesses, and crack down on patent trolls. If the bill is passed, Massachusetts would be joining more than 30 states that have laws protecting businesses from patent trolls.
